I think the best place to start is by saying welcome, and to thank you for visiting my new project, Rural Rebel Mama. I plan to use the blog to talk about my journey to fitness with strength training and intuitive eating. I’ve been working on it for a couple of months now have lost a little over 17lbs, eating some of the best food I have ever created and feeling energized and positive about weight loss like I never have before. I find myself continually pushing myself out of my comfort zone, and liking it. I’m excited to share my journey, my food, and my writing with whomever decides to stop by. Choosing a name that represents who I am and what I’m trying to accomplish proved difficult. Here is how I chose each part of RRM.
Rebel…I’m here to challenge commonly held perceptions about women, our bodies, and what we can do with them.
Rural. A word that for years caused me to shudder and head to the nearest Starbucks and/or shopping mall. And then I met him. And we fell in love, got married, started our family. And my priorities changed, my interests changed, and the environment I wanted to raise my family in changed. Facing maternity leave with my first baby we made the choice to sell our Calgary home and move permanently to our recreational property in a small lake community 5 hours north. This presents some challenges, for sure. But I also get to wake up and have my coffee on my deck, watching the lake through the trees. It’s peaceful and beautiful, but I do miss Starbucks. Some days more than others.
And speaking of those days, we are left with Mama, which is pretty self explanatory! I have a two year old daughter and my son will be six months old this month. They have changed me, fundamentally, in so many ways. I’ve never needed to like myself and take care of myself more. I look forward to fostering a healthy relationship with food and activity for both of them, although I do intend to make sure to give them just enough disfunction to make them funny. Joking, sort of!
Anyway, again, thank you for visiting and supporting my journey, please share yours in the comments so I can do the same. I consider myself a bit of a foodie so I will talk about food and share pictures of what I eat here, a lot! And I will probably talk about my feelings just a tiny bit too. I hope you enjoy!

September 16, 2013Have you always been into food or is this something new for you?

September 16, 2013This is all fairly new Melissa! I only decided that I really wanted to learn how to cook when my daughter was old enough to start eating solids, roughly two years ago. The shift to less processed and more whole foods started with my second pregnancy, a little over a year ago. I love taking classic recipes and converting them to grain and refined sugar free. Cooking has turned into an unexpected and satisfying passion for me! 🙂
